Photovoice Project by Cecile Poitevin

The pictures are part of a Photovoice project carried out by PhD candidate Cecile Poitevin in the Northern region of Ghana and were presented as part of the “Lets-plant” photo competition organised by Let's Plant e.V. in cooperation with the Tropentag 2025 conference and the Crop Trust. Congratulations Cecile!

Cecile Poitevin says that the pictures were “[t]aken by or together with community members, [and] they shed light on gendered perspectives in Sustainable Land Management. The Photovoice participants documented the importance of indigenous crops (like baobab, shea nuts, and dawadawa seeds) to local diets and women’s livelihoods. Women process these resources for food and income, especially during the dry season. However, climate change, land degradation, and pollution are threatening these crops—reducing yields and endangering both nutrition and women’s economic stability”.

Her photo series won second prize for Best Photo Story, and the participants of the Photovoice project were awarded a grant to launch a beehives project across their four participating communities.
